Dear Members,   We have  received  communication from FT(LAC) Section, Department of Commerce, Government  of India  regarding India's Trade with LAC and future  Potential.   We understand that India’s bilateral trade with 43 countries of the LAC (excluding Mexico as Mexico is treated as part of NAFTA) stood at US$ 29.33 bn in 2017-18 with exports US$ 8.61 billion and imports US$ 20.72 billion. The LAC region accounted for 2.84% of India’s total exports and 4.46% of India’s total imports in 2017-18. There has been significant increase in our bilateral trade. India’s exports to LAC and India’s imports from LAC have registered growth in 2017-18 by 19.1% and 19.85% respectively.   There is considerable potential to enhance our exports of product lines relating to chemical, plastics and allied products.   In order to enhance our trade in various product lines, DoC  has  done some simple calculations in export potential of India in tariff lines of the various product lines. While calculating the export potential, they have taken a threshold of US$ 10 million of imports by LAC region from world on each of the tariff lines at 6-digit level.  The work sheet is enclosed herewith for your reference.   Members are requested to go through the enclosed  sheet and let us know any bilateral issues and  NTMs applied by the countries of LAC which are impeding our exports of the product lines so that this could be taken up with the concerned countries.   The information on above mentioned points  is supposed to be sent to ministry at the earliest.
