Inputs on Export ban on Shea Nuts from Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo and Cote d 'Ivoire

 

Dear Members,

CHEMEXCIL is in receipt of communication from Department suggesting to seek an inputs from the cosmetics sector regarding recent export bans on raw shea nuts imposed by African countries, including Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali, and Ghana. This ban must have impacted the supply chain for shea-based products in the Indian cosmetics sector.
As you are aware that Shea nuts and shea butter are important raw materials for cosmetics, used in products like moisturizers, lotions, and hair care formulations due to their emollient and nourishing properties. The export ban can affect availability, price hike and production timelines for our members engaged in manufacturing and exporting related cosmetic products.
In view of above we request members to provide the detailed inputs as per following pointers

  1. Dependence of Shea Nuts from respective countries, volume of imports, value of imports and %ge of cosmetics production from this product.

  2. Disruptions faced due to recent export bans by African countries  (e.g., supply shortages, cost increases, or delays).

  3. Estimated financial impact on your operations/exports  (e.g., increased raw material costs, production losses).

  4. Any challenges in sourcing alternative suppliers (e.g., from other African or non-African countries).

  5. Are you exploring alternative sources for shea nuts or butter? If yes, specify countries or regions.

  6. Feasibility of substituting shea with other ingredients.

  7. Feedback from international buyers regarding supply chain disruptions.

  8. Any recommendations to ensure supply continuity.

  9. Any other relevant point
